AS media Preliminary task

Preliminary Exercise Brief: continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple pf lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

THE 180 DEGREE RULE The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle.

THE SHOT REVERSE SHOT The shot reverse shot (or shot/counter shot) is a film technique wherein one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking "back" at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other. Shot reverse shot is a feature of the "classical" Hollywood filming, which deemphasizes transitions between shots such that the audience perceives one continuous action that develops linearly, chronologically, and logically.
Continuity
Continuity is a detailed script used in making a film in order to avoid discontinuities from shot to shot. The process of maintaining the consistency of the plot, characters, time period, objects, places and events of the film in order to maintain the audience's suspension of disbelief.

Mise en scene
For the costumes the policeman Tim will be wearing black trousers, black shoes, a white shirt and Black tie. He will have to dress a smart way and look like a police officer. Emily will be wearing an all in one track suit with trainers, big earrings and gold jewellery. She will have to be dressed as common as possible.

The props will be very simple so that the main focus is on the people. There will be a table and two chairs in the middle of the room. On the table there will be a small lamp, a few pieces of paper and a tape recorder. There will also be a packet of crisps at the end.

The set design will also be very simple. It will be a dark empty room with nothing but table and chairs and a light in. The curtains will be shut so that it creates a dark atmosphere.

The lighting will be as dark as we can make it without being to dark that you can’t see it. The key light that we will use will be the light on the table so that it focuses on the characters and creates an intimidating atmosphere and to build up tension.

The character movement will start with Tim walking up the stairs and into the room. From then on both of the characters will be sitting down at the table for the remainder of the scene.

The hair on Emily will have to be in a ponytail all tied back revealing her face which will be covered in lots of over the top make-up. She will be wearing bright pink eye shadow, thick mascara and eyeliner, bright blusher and red lipstick. Tim will not be wearing any make-up.

Match on action—A continuity cut which unites two different views of the same action together at the same moment in the movement, making it seems to continue uninterrupted; for example, when a character claps his hands and the film cuts to a close up of his hands as they come together.

framing is a technique used to bring the focus to the subject.
Frames serve the double purpose of making a more aesthetically pleasing image and keeping the focus on the framed object(s). They add depth to the image, and can add a great deal to the picture when the frame is something related to the object being framed.

Evaluation

I felt that as a group we worked well and seperated the work appropriatly. We all had different tasks and job roles. For axample i played a lead acting role in this short production. we made some adjustments to our production that we had not predicted but on the whole we kept tp our plan. planning was vital in this production. firstly to film our production we had to organise a time and place to film and organise the use of camera equipment. clothing was also vital to distinguish the differnt charachter roles.
